Wav_ One is a collaborative project between South African hip-hop legend Zubz The Last Letta and acclaimed producer, musician Peach van Pletzen.
Both artists have made their individual mark on the musical landscape – Zubz as one of the artists that helped solidify the foundations of SA hip-hop and Peach with his work as Yesterday’s Pupil among other achievements.
In this two-song project, Peach uses his Lavabeast alias, which was born out of his love for rap music. He wanted a dedicated name to produce under and use to collaborate with rappers.
“I decided to use the alias Lavabeast because Yesterday’s Pupil has become associated with a certain sound and style. I wanted a space where I could be totally free from any preconceptions and Lavabeast is that space,” says Peach.
A chance meeting after not seeing each other for a while led to the two artists committing to spend a few days in the studio. Zubz says, “I have had the chance to be around Peach and his work a few years ago and remember vowing to myself that no matter what the future held, I’d work with him. That future is now. He’s a sonic genius.”
The feeling was mutual. “I bumped into Zubz and I have always admired him as an artist. I was thrilled that he was keen on working with me. The whole thing happened quite organically and it felt right.”
The end result is a sound that is not indigenous to either of them. “One of the things that first appealed to me when we started making this music is that it’s nothing like the music I have made in the past; there’s no element of boom bap type hip-hop. I’m at a stage where I am happy to stretch myself in directions that I may have not explored in the past,” says Zubz After a hiatus from the music scene, Zubz says this project is exactly the type of musical exploration he is interested in.
“I never stopped making music, I just haven’t been interested in doing it in the same way that I had done it back in the day. Much like the scene has evolved and bloomed, so have I; so this type of collaboration works perfectly for where I am in my life.”
The two songs are titled First Contact and Buy. Spend. Take. “First Contact is just that; our first track and an introduction to the MC and the beat maker,” says Zubz. Peach’s take on it is similar, ” I like the title First Contact because not only is it the result of the first collaboration between Zubz and myself, it will also be the first thing that people hear so it truly is first contact for everyone involved; artist and listener,” he says. “Buy. Spend.
Take. Is a bit of social commentary on the lack we can sometimes have within ourselves. A lack that we try, to no avail, to fill with physical things,” concludes Zubz
